The foreign exchange market — Forex or FX — is the largest and most liquid financial market on earth, with more than $7.5 trillion changing hands every single day. Yet its core idea is simple: you exchange one currency for another, hoping the one you hold rises in value. This guide breaks the essentials down into plain English so you can start with confidence.

What Is the Forex Market?

Unlike the stock market, Forex has no central exchange. It runs "over the counter" (OTC) across a global network of banks, brokers, institutions and individual traders. Because those participants span every time zone, the market stays open 24 hours a day, five days a week — from the Sydney open on Monday morning to the New York close on Friday evening. That constant availability is one of the reasons Forex is so accessible to part-time and full-time traders alike.

How a Currency Pair Works

Every Forex trade involves two currencies at once — you buy one while selling the other. That's why prices are always quoted as a pair, such as EUR/USD. The first currency is the base; the second is the quote. If EUR/USD is trading at 1.0850, it means one euro is worth 1.0850 US dollars.

  • Major pairs always include the US dollar — EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY. They have the tightest spreads and deepest liquidity.
  • Minor pairs (crosses) exclude the USD — for example EUR/GBP or AUD/JPY.
  • Exotic pairs combine a major currency with one from a smaller economy, like USD/TRY. They move sharply and carry wider spreads.

Key Terms Every Beginner Must Know

01
Pips
A pip is the smallest standard price move, usually the 4th decimal place (0.0001). If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that's one pip. Pips are how you measure profit and loss.
02
Lots
Trade size is measured in lots. A standard lot is 100,000 units, a mini lot 10,000, and a micro lot just 1,000 — letting beginners start small and control risk.
03
Leverage & Margin
Leverage lets you control a large position with a small deposit (margin). At 1:100, $1,000 controls $100,000. It magnifies profits — and losses — so use it carefully.
04
Spread
The spread is the small gap between the buy (ask) and sell (bid) price — effectively the broker's fee. Tighter spreads mean lower trading costs, which matters most for active traders.

The Four Trading Sessions

Sydney
22:00–07:00 UTC
The quiet opener of the trading week. Lower volatility, ideal for range strategies on AUD and NZD pairs.
Tokyo
00:00–09:00 UTC
The Asian session. JPY pairs are most active. Steady, orderly moves suit patient entries.
London
07:00–16:00 UTC
The busiest session globally. Huge liquidity and sharp moves on EUR and GBP pairs.
New York
13:00–22:00 UTC
USD-driven. Major economic data lands here. The London–NY overlap is the peak window.

Turning Costs Into Cashback

Every trade you place carries a cost — the spread or commission. What most beginners don't realise is that a portion of that cost can be returned to you as cashback. Through Say Affiliates, you earn an automatic rebate on every trade with a partner broker, whether the trade wins or loses. Over hundreds of trades, that adds up to a meaningful second income stream on top of your profits.

"The best time to learn the fundamentals is before your first trade. The second best time is now — and every lot you trade from here can earn cashback while you learn."
